Back when I was at Tribeca, I interviewed Dan Schechter about his fun flick Supporting Characters, about an indie film editor (Alex Karpovsky, the coffee shop manager Ray on “Girls”) who’s down on his luck in both love and fortune. The movie had pluck and showed a lot of promise, and Schechter was clearly a nice, smart guy with ambition and talent.
Fast forward a couple of years: Schechter’s latest film has a bigger budget, an quirky and impressive cast (Tim Robbins, Jennifer Aniston, John Hawkes, Yasiin Bey) and a solid crime caper pedigree. Life of Crime premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, sadly just a few weeks after the death of crime fiction master Elmore Leonard, on whose novel the film is based.
I haven’t seen it yet, but based on the trailer, I am totally in.
Life of Crime opens August 29 both in theaters and on VOD.
